An excellent blog post by Peter Szinek got me thinking on my choice of the Best Ruby Books for the year 2006.
Here’s my list:
- Ruby for Rails by David A. Black
- The Ruby Way by Hal Fulton
- Programming Ruby by Chad Fowler, Andy Hunt
- Ruby Cookbook by Lucas Carlson, Leonard Richardson
What is your personal opinion and your choice of books?

The Ruby book rankings at ProgrammingBooks.org say:
1. Programming Ruby: The Pragmatic Programmers’ Guide by Dave Thomas, Chad Fowler, Andy Hunt
2. The Ruby Way by Hal Fulton
3. Ruby Cookbook by Lucas Carlson, Leonard Richardson
4. Ruby for Rails: Ruby Techniques for Rails Developers
by David Black
But there has not been that many programmers that have ranked Ruby books sho who knows how accurate that is. I’m currently still reading through The Ruby Way 2nd edition.
Everyone’s list would definitely differ. If there’s someone completely new to programming then Chris Pine’s book “Learn to Program’ – http://pine.fm/LearnToProgram/ would be the first choice. The year 2007 would see a plethora of Ruby books.
