Everyone's list would definitely differ. If there's someone completely new to programming then Chris Pine's book "Learn to Program' - http://pine.fm/LearnToProgram/ would be the first choice. The year 2007 would see a plethora of Ruby books.

The Ruby book rankings at <a href="http://www.programmingbooks.org/" rel="nofollow">ProgrammingBooks.org</a> say:

1. Programming Ruby: The Pragmatic Programmers' Guide by Dave Thomas, Chad Fowler, Andy Hunt
2. The Ruby Way by Hal Fulton
3. Ruby Cookbook by Lucas Carlson, Leonard Richardson
4. Ruby for Rails: Ruby Techniques for Rails Developers
by David Black

But there has not been that many programmers that have ranked Ruby books sho who knows how accurate that is. I'm currently still reading through The Ruby Way 2nd edition.
